ICON developed the landscape design for the Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Mosque, which is Al Ain’s largest mosque. The site is located above an archaeological site of a mud-brick mosque from the early Islamic period. This has created an opportunity to educate visitors about the historical remains that lay beneath.
The design comprises a myriad of landscaped areas, shaded walkways, seating, scented planting, and ornamental patterns. A 450 m2 water feature adorns the entrance plaza in a mirror-like character reflect- ing movement and activity. ICON worked with a MOPA agricultural engineer to ensure that the Islamic Display Gardens featured a selection of plants and botanical species, which are mentioned in different verses of the Quran.
